The Magpies welcomed old rivals Carmarthen Athletic to Parc y Mynydd Mawr for the first time in many a year and held out to secure a fine 14-9 victory in monsoon conditions. In Tumble's first fixture back in Division 2 the home side totally dominated field terrotary and but for a few handling errors at key moments coupled with a strong Athletic scrum the score could have been more. Tumble played into a strong wind during the first half and conceded two penalty kicks during the Athletic's infrequent visits into their half. Captain and man of the match Hefin Dumbrill drove over from close range to make the score 5-6 at the break. The second half played out much the same way as the first with Tumble dominating possession but unable to turn good play into try scoring opportunities. Frequent infringements saw a flurry of yellow cards with outside half Steven Hewitt capitalising to kick three penalties. The Magpies saw out ten minutes of sustained pressure from the Athletic at the end of the game to secure a 14-9 victory. It was pleasing to see a number of last year's successful youth team playing and adapting well to senior rugby. Tumble will travel down to Pembrokeshire next Saturday in good spirits to face Fishguard and Goodwick RFC.
