Magpies battle against Athletic

The 1st XV welcomed Carmarthen Athletic RFC to Parc y Mynydd Mawr on Saturday afternoon still looking for that elusive first victory. The Magpies started well and took the lead after five minutes when captain and outside half Steve Hewitt slotted over a penalty kick. The Athletic drew level, 3-3 after 11 minutes when a Tumble transgression yielded a penalty which the Athletic duly converted. The Athletic now started getting the upper hand and went 3-10 ahead after 20 minutes with a converted try. Their lead was extended further on the stroke of half time with another converted try to make the score 3-17 at the interval.

The second half started with further Athletic pressure on the Tumble defence. An overlap was worked on the right and with Hewitt finding himself against two attackers he was adjudged to have intentionally knocked the ball on when going for the interception. Referee Hyde awarded the penalty try to make the score 3-24 and Hewitt was sent to the bin for 10 minutes. The numerical disadvantage seemed to spur the Magpies into life and back the came with openside flanker diving over for a try four minutes later to make the score 8-24. The Magpies now began to dominate territory and their effort could not be faulted with some hard running and determined tackling. Another try came after 23 minutes when prop Conner Allen powered over the line; the conversion was missed to make the score 13-24. The Magpies were now camped in Athletic territory and with a little luck and more confidence they could have added to the score and gone onto challenge for the lead.

This was a much-improved performance on last week against St Clears with the players showing great effort and commitment. There is little between the majority of sides in this division and with a little luck the Magpies will get the victory that will turn their season around. Tumble now wait until the 9th December for their next league game when Loughor visit Parc y Mynydd Mawr. The break will provide an opportunity for a number of players to come back from injury and further strengthen the squad.
