Piod Pinc win first away game to stay second

Another milestone was achieved in the history of the Piod Pinc on Sunday afternoon as the girls secured their first away victory, 7-17 at Pontarddulais RFC Ladies. With captain Tina Thomas and Scarlets hooker Hannah Stephens both unavailable the Piod Pinc were missing two of their most influential forwards for the game against a side which had beaten them convincingly home and away last season (55-5 away, 5-39 home). Tumble started the game well and dominated territory in the early stages before finally taking the lead after 26 minutes with an individual try from classy outside half Karen Mayze. Unfortunately the conversion was missed but the Piod Pinc maintained their dominance and scored another try five minutes later when centre Vicki Gibbons powered over after a typical blockbusting run. Mayze stepped up to slot over the conversion and make the score 0-12 to Tumble at the break.

The second half saw Pontarddulais come back into the game through their heavier pack and powerful forward runners. Playing a tight forward orientated game Bont pinned Tumble into their own half and pulled 7 points back after 50 minutes with a converted try from their prop forward. Things got even harder for the Piod Pinc five minutes later when hard running centre Gibbons was yellow carded after an infringement at a ruck. With their backs against the wall Tumble dug in deep and kept Bont from scoring any additional points. Back up to their full complement of players Tumble scored their third try of the game with two minutes left on the clock with another piece of individual magic from Mayze who beat the covering defence to score near the posts. The conversion was missed but the Piod Pinc held out to not only secure a 7-17 victory but also their first away from Parc y Mynydd Mawr.

Tumble stay in second position in Division 3 with 19 points from 5 games. They are three points behind leaders Morriston Ladies, who won 7-10 at Clwb Rygbi Cymry Caerdydd and eight points ahead of third placed Deri, who do however have two games in hand. Next weekend the girls make the long trip to Cardiff to play Cymry Caerdydd, kick off 2.30pm.
