Derby Day disappointment for Magpies

The Magpies made the short trip down Cwm Gwendraeth on Saturday afternoon to face old rivals Trimsaran RFC in Specsavers Division 3 West B. Having a number of influential forwards missing through injury or unavailability Tumble made a number of changes up front from the team that defeated Lampeter Town RFC the previous weekend. The game saw Trim come out of the blocks fast and immediately put the Magpies under pressure up front, taking the lead after ten minutes with a penalty kick. The Trim pack was on the front foot and their number 8 was making good yardage with the ball in hand. With the ball being slowed at the ruck Tumble struggled to play with the tempo that had characterised their play over the last few weeks. The Trimsaran lead was extended after 20 minutes when they went over for a converted try to leave Tumble trailing 10-0. The try seemed to however spur Tumble into action and they started to get themselves back into the game. Within seven minutes they had scored a try of their own through scrum half Iwan Morgan with his half back partner Steven Hewitt adding the conversation to make the score 10-7. The halftime whistle sounded with the Magpies three points behind.

Into the second half and it was the Magpies who were first to score through centre and captain Steffan Price. Hewitt added the conversion to give the Magpies the lead for the first time in the match, 10-14. There wasn't much time for the Tumble support to celebrate as within five minutes Trimsaran had scored a try of their own to retake the lead. The conversation was missed making it 15-14 to the hosts. The lead was now going back and forth between the two teams and a few minutes later pacey Magpies wing Sam Jones crossed for an unconverted try to make the score 15-19. There was still however time for more drama as Trimsaran scored their third try to make the score 20-19. With the seconds ticking down Tumble were awarded a penalty from long range and all those of a Tumble persuasion held their breath. Unfortunately, the penalty sailed wide and the referee blew his whistle to signal the win for Trimsaran. The win was not to be but it's back to the drawing board as we look forward to the visit of Llandeilo RFC to Parc y Mynydd Mawr next Saturday afternoon, kick-off 2.30pm. This will be our first home game since beating Furnace United RFC on 28 September so please come and support the boys.

Man of the Match: Young prop Osian Flint who carried and tackled well throughout the game. Centre Richard Davies also had a fine game, carrying hard throughout.
