The Youth made the long trip east to Ystrad Mynach in Caerphilly County on Saturday afternoon to face Penallta RFC in the second round of the Welsh Plate competition. Penallta came out strong from the first kick off and put the Young Magpies under pressure taking only eight minutes to go over for a converted try, 7-0 to the hosts. The try seemed to galvanise Tumble and they put all the pressure on Penallta for the remainder of the half scoring two tries by hooker Morgan Scrace and number 8 Elis Vaughan, a penalty from centre Sion Yip and a conversion from outside half Jude John. The score was 7-15 to the Magpies at the interval.
Penallta scored a run away try at the start of the second half to close the gap to 12-15. Again the Magpies regathered themselves and put pressure on the East Walians. A Jude John penalty kept the scoreboard ticking at 12-18 before fullback Dafydd Rees scored a lovely 30 metre run in which John converted to make the score 12-25. Penallta had the final say when they scored a consolation try with the last play of the game. Final score 17-25 and a great win for the Youth at a difficult place to visit. The boys now await the draw for the third round of the Plate competition.
