Disappointment for the Magpies at Penygroes

The Magpies made the short journey to Penygroes RFC in Admiral League Division 3 West B hoping to continue their good recent form. Unfortunately, despite a late comeback, they slipped to a disappointing 28-23 defeat against second placed Penygroes. Tumble had the opportunity to take an early lead, but a penalty attempt by fullback Steven Hewitt dropped short of the posts. Five minutes later, Penygroes took a 7-0 lead with a converted try before Hewitt closed the lead after 20 minutes with a penalty in front of the posts. A penalty for Penygroes made it 10-3 before Hewitt again closed the margin with another successful penalty on 33 minutes. In the closing stages of the half, Penygroes went over for another converted try to make it 17-6 and despite the Magpies following that up with a disallowed try that's how the score remained at halftime. Tumble had it all to do in the second half.

The second half got off to the worst possible start for the Magpies when Penygroes went over for an early try. The conversion hit the upright making it 22-6 to the home side. A few minutes later the Tumble supporters finally had something to cheers about when number 8 Jack Tucker went over for a try wide out to make the score 22-11. The conversion was missed from a narrow angle. Two quickfire penalties to Penygroes stretched their lead to 28-11 leaving the Magpies staring down the barrel of a defeat. Tumble now staged a come back in the last ten minutes of the game with a try from fullback Scott Jones followed by another from captain and centre Steffan Price, the later converted by Hewitt making the score 28-23. Unfortunately, it was too little too late and the referee blew for full time, much to the disappointment of those travelling supporters that had braved the cold to watch the game.

A disappointing performance, especially after last week's victory over Llandeilo with the boys guilty of poor handling and a series of mistakes which gifted points to their opponents. In a below par team performance the fine individual performances and effort of flankers Dafydd Griffiths and Nathan Willard were a notable exception. It's now back to the drawing board as we prepare to welcome Llangadog RFC to Parc y Mynydd Mawr next Saturday in the final game before Christmas, kick off 2.30pm. Come and support the boys.
