After the disappointment of Wednesday night's heavy loss against Fishguard the Magpies welcomed Amman United to Parc y Mynydd Mawr for this key fixture in the battle to retain Division 2 West status for next season. Chris Davies and his coaching staff were forced to reshuffle the side for their third game in a week as they had around ten first team squad players not available for selection and it appeared that Amman arrived in Cwm Gwendraeth with similar selection headaches. Amman started the game well and took the lead within a minute with an unconverted try before captain and outside half Steven Hewitt brought the score back to 3-5 with a well taken penalty. With fifteen minutes on the clock the Magpies took the lead when Youth team winger Elis Lewis went over in the right hand corner for his first try in senior rugby, Hewitt duly converted. Four minutes later Amman were back on level terms at 10-10 when they went over for their second unconverted try of the game. Tumble retook the lead after 23 minutes when dangerous scrum half Iwan Morgan went over for a try under the posts after a break from openside flanker Owain Davies, Hewitt again converted to make the score 17-10. With five minutes to go before half time Amman again broke the Tumble defensive line to score a converted try which brought the scores back level at 17-17. The Magpies were the next on the scoresheet when Hewitt released centre Scott Jones in midfield and the youngster outpaced the covering defence to score under the posts. The try was converted by Hewitt to make the score 24-17. Again Amman replied almost immediately with an unconverted try to make the score 24-24 at halftime.
Within five minutes of the restart the Magpies were back in the lead when blindside flanker Jac Edwards powered his way over the line to make the score 29-24, securing the bonus point in the process, the conversion was missed. It only took another 10 minutes for Tumble to take a two score lead when prop Dafydd Humphreys (fresh from his hatrick against Llanybydder the previous weekend) went over for a try from a driving maul. Hewitt added the conversion to make the score 36-24 and give the Magpies some breathing space. With injuries in the front row Amman elected to go to uncontested scrums and scored their fifth try of the game with 9 minutes left on the clock, making the score 36-29. With hearts in mouths the Magpies' supporters held their breath and counted the clock down until the final whistle to guarantee the five point win for the Black and Whites. Tumble are now up to seventh position in Division 2 West with three games to play but know they have a stiff task next Saturday when title favorites Whitland RFC visit Parc y Mynydd Mawr. Kick-off is at 2.30pm, please come and support the boys.
