First game of the 2019/2020 season and the Piod Pinc head down to Parc Coed Bach to face the newly formed West Swansea Hawks- a team made up predominantly of former Gorseinon and Pontarddulais.
Hawks catch Piods sleeping from the off as they gather the ball from their own k.o, skimming us down the wing to score in the corner. Conversion in unsuccessful and the score within the opening minute stands at 5-0.
Piods fight their way down to the Hawks try line and things look promising but we’re penalised for holding on. Hawks capitalise, breaking through gain line running the length of the pitch before placing the ball down under the posts. Hawks fly half Swift secures the conversion this time and with 10 minutes on the clock the score is 12-0. Hawks follow up with another try almost immediately, 17-0.
It’s 20 minutes into the game before the Piods are rewarded with some points on the board as Bambi runs around the Hawks defence to score the Piods first try of the season and this game, score stands at 17-5. We then play a little game of ‘to me, to you’ as Hawks reply with another try at 26 minutes, but our Whits had an answer to that as she charges through the Hawks. She converts her own try and the score stands at 22-12. It’s Hawks turn to score, and they do as scrum half Sue slips through Piods defence to score. Piods turn to respond, however Hawks retain possession of the ball and a few minutes before half time they have the last word as the cross the line for the 6th time this half and the score stands at 32-12.
The second half whistle goes, and Hawks repeat the first few minutes of the first half scoring immediately down the wing, 37-12. Piods respond, we hold strong in the scrum, we’re moving forward, we’ve found our momentum. We get the ball out and send it wide where full back Alaw receives and places down over line- 37-19. Hawks are still playing ‘to me, to you’ and score their second try of the second half minutes after ours. 55 minutes in and it’s Hawks’ lineout, Piods send Catrin up and we steal the ball, we react and it’s fly hard Darcys turn to cross the line, Whitney converts and its 44-26. Piods almost score a further two times before seeing some more points on the board but one is fumbled short of the line and the second was awarded but the decision is reversed. Third time lucky at 71 minutes as Alaw cross the line for her second of the game, and Whitney converts once again, 44-33.
West Swansea Hawks score a further two tries before the final whistle and the final score stands at 58-33. We look forward to welcoming the Hawks to Parc y Mynydd Mawr end of October for round two of ‘to me, to you’ with less ‘to you!’
