Magpies get campaign off to a wining start

The Magpies played their first competitive fixture since March 2020 when they visited the Cherries of Cwmgors on Saturday afternoon. Tumble took an early lead when acting captain Steve Hewitt slotted over a penalty with only a couple of minutes on the clock to make it 0-3 to the visitors. The lead was extended a few minutes later when Hewitt added another penalty to make it 0-6. Young wing Kieran Jones, making his first team debut was the next to score with a neat try in the corner to stretch the lead to 0-11, the conversion was missed. Another Hewitt penalty made it 0-14 before the Cherries got on the score sheet with a penalty of their own, 3-14. The Magpies had the last word of the first half when pacey full back Elis Lewis, marking his return to the club scored a try wide out after making a 25 yard run. Again the conversion was missed giving Tumble a 3-19 lead at the interval.

Cwmgors started the second half well and got on the score sheet early on with a try of their own, pulling the deficit back to 8-19. Hard running flanker Callum Williams, another player marking his return to the club was the next to go over for a try which stretched the lead to 8-24 in the Magpies' favor. Williams again powered himself over for another try which secured the bonus point for Tumble. Hewitt slotted over the conversion to make the score 8-31, which is how the game ended. A five point bonus point win was a successful afternoon for a young Tumble side that had a number of experienced players unavailable for the game. Especially pleasing was the number of players graduating from the pre-covid youth squad featuring and making an impact. It was also pleasing to see players like Callum Williams, Steffan Owen and Elis Lewis returning to the club.

Next up are Amman United, who top the WRU Bowl, District F1 table next Saturday at Parc y Mynydd Mawr (kick off 2.30pm). Amman have been showing some great form and we're sure in for a ding-dong battle, come and support the boys.
