Pressure mounting towards final run in

The Magpies, struggling with injuries and absentees, put in a strong performance against a bare fifteen from Penybanc. The match started with uncontested scrums and it was the Tigers that opened the scoring when centre Tom Gale broke through some weak tackling to score wide out after twenty minutes.

The Magpies pressured the away team with some strong running from  No. 8 Willard but Penybanc held firm. Despite repeated attempts to cross the line, Tumble's only response was a penalty from eighteen metres out by the evergreen Leighton McKenna after thirty minutes play. Tumble looked little ponderous behind and lacked direction however, when Michael Davies broke the cover tackle, he sped away to score in the corner with thirty seven minutes gone. With the try going unconverted Tumble upped the tempo of the game and, two minutes later Steven Hewitt intercepted to score under the posts. McKenna converted to give the Magpies a healthy ten point lead.

Penybanc fought back and scored a try of their own through Owen Williams and, with Mike Tench adding the extras, half time looked shaky for the home side with only a three point lead.

The second half saw Penybanc defend resolutely for the first twenty but, when fresh legs were introduced, Tumble ran in two tries in quick succession by Steff Price and Nicky Allinson one of which was converted by Steve Hewitt. The bonus point had been achieved but a further score by the hard working Darren Williams with five minutes remaining looked enough.

At the death Penybanc worked a nice mover and got a consolation try with the referee blowing up thereafter.

With the Magpies final three games all away, they have their work cut out if they are to maintain their push for promotion. Hard work and commitment is needed if they are to get a positive result next week down at Nantgaredig.
