Due to a lack of additional changing facilities at Parc y Mynydd Mawr with the 1st XV playing at home to Carmarthen Athletic the Youth XV were forced to switch their ‘home’ Carmarthenshire Bowl game against Furnace United RFC to Pontyberem Park. Having gone the majority of the season with a thread bare squad and a number of key players being forced to play out of position it was great to see a strong team take the field on Saturday afternoon, although some tinkering was still needed in the backline with flanker Liam Jones having to line up at 12. Tumble’s makeshift midfield found themselves up against a sharp Furnace back line that constantly won ground and it was the Cherry & White’s who scored first after they capitalised on a poor chip kick from the Magpies. Tumble got back into the game soon after when team stalwart Osian Flint, playing at second row powered his way over. Prop Jack Tucker, hooker Ashley Evans and backrower Harry McBryde (back in the side after returning from a trip to Canada) completed the Tumble try scoring with Morgan Davies slotting over the four conversions with some superb placekicking. Although the game was always nip and tuck the Magpies did just enough to hold out for the win, despite losing Davies to a yellow card 12 minutes from the end of the game.
This was a great win for the boys after a difficult season and hopefully a sign of a strong end to the season. Coach’s Man of the Match – Osian Flint, who as always gave everything and helped gain the hard yards throughout the game. Special mention to Ashley Evans who went over for his first try. Ashley is a club man through and through having trained hard and played wherever needed throughout the season.
Finally, big thanks to Pontyberem RFC for allowing us to use their field at short notice. Diolch yn fawr.
