The Piod Pinc welcomed the West Swansea Hawks to Parc y Mynydd Mawr on Sunday afternoon keen to avenge the away defeat earlier in the season. The game started with both teams playing with just 14 players due to a player arriving late for the Hawks. The Hawks also requested to play uncontested scrummages due to their lack of experienced front row players. From the kick off the Hawks applied pressure and forced the Piod Pinc to defend their own try line. Tumble worked hard to steal the ball back in a ruck and attempt to clear their try line but inadvertently gave a penalty away with a forward pass off the floor. The Hawks took the penalty quickly five metres from the try line and with the Tumble defence stretched the Hawks went over for the first try of the game. The conversation was missed making it 0-5 to the visitors. The game restarted and it was a battle for both teams to keep the ball in their possession. Piod Pinc captain Tina Thomas regained possession of the ball with the help of her forwards before making a break and carrying the ball for 30 metres up field, handing off three players on her way. The Hawks manage to haul Tina down but not before she offloaded to Meleri Hicks who went over for an unconverted try to level the scores at 5-5. With the break in play the Hawks' 15th player joined the game and allowed Tumble to go up to 15 players with the addition of Michelle Roberts. However, it wasn’t long before a Tumble player was shown the yellow card by referee Ricky Guest for going over the top bringing the Piod Pinc back down to 14 ladies for 10 minutes. A player down Tumble found themselves back in defence once again and the Hawks took advantage of the numerical advantage by using good handling skills to score again in the corner. The conversation is missed making the score 5-10 to the Hawks at the interval.
The second half picked up pretty much the same way the first half ended, very evenly contested with both sides fighting for possession. Player was stopped when the Piod Pinc suffered an injury but from the restart the ball was passed to outside half Sophie Campbell-Cross, who offloaded to Meleri Hicks who went over for her second try of the afternoon. The conversion was missed to level the score at 10-10. The action continued and the Piod Pinc regained procession through their forwards. Number 8 Angharad Williams fed the ball out to replacement Alaw Hughes who precedes to dance through five would be tacklers before getting tackled and offloading to the supporting Meleri Hicks who goes over to score a hat trick of tries. A brief change in kicker duties sees Alaw Hughes convert successfully to make the score 17-10 to Tumble. The game restarts and the Tumble forwards worked together to hit the Hawks defence hard with pod after pod within the opposition their 22. The Piod Pinc’s determination to win on their home ground was obvious when they worked the ball to Catrin Rees, playing out of position in the backs. Catrin received the ball and powered over the line to make it 22-10 to the Piod Pinc. The conversation was unsuccessful but referee Guest signals the end of the game and the fifth win on the trot for the Piod Pinc.
Forward of the match was awarded to Angharad Williams (Vice-Captain).
Back of the match was awarded to Tina Thomas (Captain).
The Piod Pinc wish to say a special thank you to our four water girls.
