Tumble manufacture win against high flying Lampeter

The Magpies travelled away to Lampeter and came back with four well earned points. In a match which showed Tumble's early dominance, the linesout being dominated by captain Hefin Dumbrill and the rock like Gareth Beynon, Tumble went ahead through the educated boot of the youthful Leighton Mckenna who kicked a thirty metre penalty after ten minutes play. Tumble's forwards were impressive with ball in hand and props Dafydd Humphries and James Stephens drove hard into attack. With metres being gained through some mazy running from the lively backs, it wasn't long before Mckenna added his second penalty after fifteen minutes.

Lampeter hadn't made any inroads into the Magpies half but, gathering up the restart, they quickly sped the ball wide and, with some weak defence allowing no. 8  Bransden to run through, he fed to his support and a try was scored in the corner which went converted giving Lampeter the lead. Both sides handled the ball and tried to play open rugby and hooker Rhys Lewis was prominent with ball in hand.

Tumble eventually unlocked a stout defence and the lithesome centre Steffan Price jinked his way under the posts for a try which Mckenna converted. Leading up to half time both sides swopped penalties and Tumble looked good for their six point lead.

Tumble were forced to use relacement Josh Davies early on following wing Michael Edwards leaving the field with an eye injury. The second half started badly for the Magpies when a wayward kick was run back by Lampeter resulting in wing Griffiths scoring. The resulting touchline conversion gave the lead back to Lampeter. Tumble used their substitutes and, with Kieran Richrds providing solidity up front and Emlyn Phillips the guile, the forwards were able to drive at the heart of a wobbling defence. Tumble managed to maul their way over the line and prop James Stephens got the score.

With ten minutes left Lampeter pressed and with Tumbles Owens being adjudged offside some fifteeen metres out, Tumble went down to fourteen men. The resultant penalty saw Lampeter close to within a point. Now under pressure, Tumble conceded three kickable penalties in the last eight minutes, one went wide, one fell short and the third rebounded back into play and Tumble were able to clear the danger.

Play was into stoppage time, Lampeter pressed but with Steff Owen tackling hard on his own ten metre line, Lampeter recycled but Steffan Price intercepted and ran fifty metres to score under the posts. Leighton Mckenna added the two points to give the Magpies an eight point lead. With the game won, Tumble relaxed and allowed Lampeter the chance to score and, when they went over from the restart, the conversion saw them back to within a point but the referee's whistle went immediately thereafter.

Tumble have finally won away from home in the league but they will need to step up a gear as the now face third placed Llangadog home at Parc y Mynyddmawr on 7th November.
