Magpies go top after win at battling Bynea

The Magpies travelled to bottom side Bynea RFC on Saturday afternoon in a rearranged league fixture knowing that with Amman United not in action a bonus point win would take them top of the league for the first time this season.

Tumble started off like a train and within 52 seconds outstanding support play had seen openside flanker Tom Miles storm over after taking a pop pass from second row Ryan Lewis after a kick ahead from scrum half Iwan Morgan had been gathered. Outside half Steven Hewitt stepped up to add the extras and give Tumble a 0-7 lead. Within six minutes Miles had gone over again in a near carbon copy of the first try, again the conversation was added by Hewitt to make the score 0-14. It looked at this point like it was to be a long afternoon for the Bulldogs of Bynea but credit to the bottom placed team that they really dug in and made a game of it. Despite having plenty of possession and a few scoring opportunities the Magpies could not add to their early two tries until the 38th minute when a break by second row Lewis saw full back Nicky Allinson sprint down the left touch line, beat the covering defence and go over from 30 metres out. Allinson rounded to score under the posts and Hewitt made no mistake with the conversion making it 0-21 at the interval.

With the wind at their backs much was expected of the Magpies in the second half but it took a full 20 minutes before the next score. Scrum half Iwan Morgan made ground and popped off to wing Sam Jones who cut a beautiful angle to carve his way through the centre of the Bynea defence and score from 20 metres out. With the much needed bonus point secured Hewitt made no mistake with the conversion making the score 0-28. The Magpies were securing plentiful possession in the lineout on both their own and opposition throw in through second row Ryan Lewis but were struggling to create scoring chances and it was Bynea who struck next when a break saw then carve through the midfield and score under the posts. Unbelievably from straight in front of the posts the conversation attempt struck the upright and bounced out to leave the score 5-28. The Magpies were not finished and a minute from time went over for their fourth try over the game when second row Jack Tucker powered his way over from close range. Replacement outside half Morgan Davies stepped up to nail the conversation, making the score 5-35, which is how the game ended. The win takes Tumble to the summit of Specsavers Division 3 West B for the first time this season on 50 points, a point ahead of Amman United who have a game in hand. The Magpies now have a week before they travel to Penygroes RFC in a local derby next Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.

Man of the match: Scrum half Iwan Morgan who made a series of strong runs throughout the game and always kept the Bynea defence busy.
