On Saturday afternoon the Magpies made the journey to Athletic Park in Johnstown to play old rivals Carmarthen Athletic RFC in Division 2 West. Tumble started the game well and had much of the play and territory in the first half against third placed Athletic but could not capitalise when opportunities to score presented themselves. The Magpies did however take the lead after 26 minutes when an infringement from an Athletic player saw them awarded a penalty kick directly in front of the posts. Outside Half Mitch Jones stepped up and slotted over the kick to give Tumble a 0-3 lead. Twelve minutes later the Athletic were back on level terms 3-3 when Tumble were penalised for not rolling away after the tackle. On the stroke of half time the Magpies retook the lead when Mitch Jones added another penalty goal to make the score 3-6 to the visitors.
The Athletic upped the tempo after the interval and scored under the post after two minutes. The conversion was added to give the Red and Blacks the lead for the first time in the game, 10-6. On 21 minutes the Athletic scored another converted try to make the score 17-6 and give the Magpies a mountain to climb. Four minutes later the Athletic were awarded a scrum five. With the scrum wheeling the referee made the decision to award a penalty try to the Athletic which seemed harsh seeing that this was the first such instance in the game and no warnings had been previously issued. The score was now 24-6 to the Athletic but the Magpies refused to give up and had a couple more opportunities to score which unfortunately they couldn’t capitalise upon.
The effort of the players from number 1 to 20 could not be faulted during the game and with a bit of luck and confidence this was a game that could have been won against a side third in the league. The boys just need to keep showing the same heart and desire in their remaining fixtures and maintain the tempo of the first half for the full 80 minutes and the wins will surely come. Next up are league leaders Penclawdd RFC who visit Parc y Mynydd Mawr next Saturday, kick-off 2.30pm.
