The Youth team’s first league game saw them fielding eight new players six of whom were playing their first game of youth rugby. The injection of new players has now enabled the squad to have a balance of boys in their first, second and third year of youth rugby which puts Tumble RFC Youth in a strong position for next season with a number of players moving up from our successful Under 16’s team. This season is also the first in a number of years that the club has a full set of junior sides age groups feeding into the youth team which again is positive for the future of our youth and senior teams.
The game started with an even balance of attack and defence by both teams with scores even for the first 20 minutes until an older Brynamman outfit slotted over a penalty for an ill-timed tackle. Apart from this transgression the discipline of the Magpies side towards the referee and breakdown area was spot on and a pleasing aspect of the game. With an experienced team Brynamman upped the tempo and put pressure on the Tumble defence finally breaking through for a try after the 24th minute mark. This seemed to give the Greens a boost and two more quickfire tries followed. The young Magpies kept to the task and first phase scrums looked strong, a sign of things to come for this young powerful pack. With the scores at 0- 29 it would have been easy for heads to go down but full credit to Tumble as they continued playing to the end and were rewarded through a try by powerful running Number 8 Ryan Williams.
Man of the Match was awarded to seond row Jac Gordon for his constant powerful defence and support play. Special mention must again go to Cian Davies for his defence and eagerness to create in attack. Also fantastic effort to all the new members of the squad.
Next game is against Llangennech RFC on either Friday or Saturday.
Coach word - Great discipline, great balanced squad = great future.
