The Piods last played Cilfynydd in October 2017, so it was nice to welcome them back to Parc y Mynydd Mawr almost two years since our last encounter. Due to some rugby league clashes Cilfynydd were down a number of players and turned up with 14 with another one the way. Piods however had the opposite issue as we had 26 available players for this fixture, with 22 making the match day squad. The team sees a few changes for this match as Alan steps into the fly half position, Mel to fullback, Polo to centre and Budgie to second row (little does she know she won’t have any knees at the end of the game!)
Game kicks off with 14 each side, and Piods are the first to score as Alan crosses the try line, conversion is unsuccessful but we’re off to a good start. Cilfynydds 15th player shows up at 20 minutes and both teams are back to full sides, unfortunately it doesn’t last very long as an injury means Cilfynydd go back down to 14. Within 5 minutes and clearly unaware that they should be at a disadvantage, Cilfynydds no.4 crosses the try line, conversion is successful and score stands at 5-7. Piods retaliate with two tries of their own, firstly from Gemma as she crosses the line in the corner and secondly through Darcy drifts across only to straighten at the last moment breaking the gain line and running in her try from the half way line. Half time score 17-7.
Cilfynydd put in an admirable shift during the second half and defend for almost the entire 40 minutes. Piods first try of the second half comes two minutes in from Mel, slightly worse for wear from the Rock’N’Roll the night before straight into Ruck’N’Roll Over today she crosses the line at 42 minutes. Whitney provides the extra 2 and we are 24-7 up. 10 minutes later Bambi crosses the line, and again Whits converts 31-7. With 63 minutes on the clock comes my favourite try of the day, not because of its skill, the team work behind it or any logic, but because its just pure hangover. Mel starts her run from the half way line, making hard work of things, runs the entire width of the pitch before making a sharp 90 degree turn on the wing and running down the remaining length of the pitch. With 15 minutes left on the clock, Cilfynydd hold us out. Final score 36-7.
