Search goes on for that elusive win

The Magpies traveled west to St Clears hopeful of emulating their recent National Plate win against the same opposition but suffered the disappointment of a 32-19 defeat. Tumble started the game well and were unlucky not to take the lead after five minutes when the ball was lost over the line in the act of scoring; back came the Saints and ten minutes later after a low drive they were awarded a try when the referee deemed that the ball had been grounded, the conversion was missed. Five minutes later St Clears were 12-0 ahead when their flanker broke from 20 yards out to score a converted try. This score seemed to bring the Magpies to life and they were soon back on level terms through tries from Number 8 Steffan Davies and second row Nathan Willard. Captain and outside half Steven Hewitt converting the latter to make the score 12-12. On the stroke of half time the referee awarded a penalty to the Saints after Tumble were penalised for being off-side in front of the posts. The kick was landed and St Clears went into the break 15-12 ahead.

The second half started with St Clears excerpting pressure on the Magpies and they were deep in Tumble territory when full back Scott Jones intercepted 5 yards out to run the length of the field for a try which was converted by Hewitt. St Clears now upped the pressure and brought out mistakes in the Magpies' play. Two tries were score by St Clears to take them into a 25-19 lead before a late converted try saw them win the game 32-19 and deny Tumble even a losing bonus point. It was evident from today's game that this young side needs the confidence that would be gained from getting that first win. It's a fine line between winning and losing but the lift from that first win would make all the difference.

Next Saturday the Magpies welcome fifth placed Carmarthen Athletic to Parc y Mynydd Mawr (kick off 2.30pm), lets get a crowd over the park to support the boys. The game will be followed by Wales v Australia on the Big Screen over the club (£2 a pint during and an hour either side of the game).
