The Magpies were made to battle all the way for a vital 5 points in the race for the Division 3 West B title on Saturday afternoon at Cae Castell, home of Furnace United RFC. Tumble took the lead when an interception in the Magpies 22 saw experienced full back Steven Hewitt go over for a try which he converted himself. The Cherry and Whites closed the score back to 6-7 with two successful penalties before taking the lead with an unconverted try, 11-10 to the home side. Hewitt gave the Magpies the lead again with a smartly struck penalty making the score 11-13 before a drop goal on the half hour mark regained Furnace a slender 14-13 lead, which is how the score remained at the interval.
The second half got off to the worst possible start for Tumble when Furnace went over for an early converted try, stretching their lead to 21-13. Back came the Magpies through a try by captain and centre Steffan Price which was converted by the accurate boot of Hewitt, 21-20 and the Magpies right back in it. The pendulum of this game then swung when Magpies number 8 Steffan Davies powered over for a try, duly converted by Hewitt which game the visitors the lead for the first time since early in the first half, 21-27. Hewitt then added a penalty which stretched the lead to 21-30. If Magpies supporters now thought that their side now had the ascendancy Furnace had other ideas when they went over for their third try of the game. The conversion was missed to make the score 26-30. The Magpies again upped the tempo and saw pacey winger Elis Lewis go over for a try, which was again converted by the accurate Hewitt. The score was now 26-37 and Lewis' try had secured the critical bonus point. Again Furnace wouldn't lie down and their fourth try of the game again brought the score back to within four points, 33-37 rattling the nerves of the Magpies support in the process. In the final minutes of the game Tumble number 8 Steffan Davies crossed for his second try of the game making the score 33-42. The conversion attempted went wide but the critical bonus point win was secured.
A much needed bonus point win as the battle for the title hots up going into the final three games. Special mention to Callum Williams, Steffan Davies and Owain Williams who all carried well and the ever reliable boot for fullback Steven Hewitt. Next week the Magpies travel to Betws RFC and need your support once again.
