Another hard fought victory saw Tumble run out winners but fail to pick up a bonus point against a doged Llangadog side at Parc y Mynydd Mawr.
The early play was dominated by the home side with the back row unit harrying their opponents into mistakes. Lively flanker Dafydd Griffiths tackled like a man possessed and, with Llangadog being pinned into their own twenty two it was only a matter of time before the first score materialised. Winning a lineout 20 metres out through tall Gareth Beynon, Tumble drove forward went through seven phases and centre Steffan Price jinked over for a try which Steven Hewitt converted. Ten minutes gone.
With Llangadog kicking off, Tumble gathered the ball and drove back, Sam Cavill charged and was supported by the wily Lee Colling. Play was swept into the visitors twenty two but, when the ball was turned over Llangadog kicked upfield. The ball was gathered by wing Sam Jones and, with a neat sidestep outpaced his opposite number and he scored wide out. Steve Hewitt converted with fourteen minutes gone.
Tumble’s supporters anticipated several more scores but Llangadog were resolute in defence. The Magpies seemed to lose their shape and direction with the early lead and, the visitors made some headway into home territory. With Tumble being penalised for offside, Outside half Aled Davies kicked a penalty from 30 metres with 29 minutes gone.
Play then ended up back and forth between the two ten metre lines and Nathan Willard’s characteristic charging runs were held up by some solid defence. Both defences were solid however a break by Llan’s scrum half cut through Tumble’s defence and only a try saving tackle by Tucker saved the score. Half time came with the score 14-3.
On fifty minutes, the visitors reduced arrears with another penalty from Davies. Llangadog looked a different team and they created problems for Tumble with several close calls on the home try line. Maul after maul edged closer to their line and with scrum half Iwan Morgan receiving yellow for an offence on the floor, Tumble were lucky not to concede a penalty try.
The Magpies rang the changes after sixty minutes and Mike Powell and flanker Tom Miles added much needed direction going forward. Llangadog pressed but Tumble held firm Osian Flint used his weight in defence and wing Mike Edwards had a run but was tied up. In the gloom and rain, Tumble rumbled close, a succession of penalties took them close to Llangadog’s line and with live wire replacement scrum half Morgan Davies sniping on the fringes, an astutely timed run by centre Price saw him receive the ball and sauntered over for a converted try. The referee then blew for full time and secured a 21-6 win for the Magpies.
Tumble’s man of the match was Nathan Willard who carrying and charging runs are his trademark now.
