Magpies slip to defeat at Saints

The Magpies travelled west to face the Saints of St Clears RFC on Saturday afternoon in the Division 2 West bottom of the table clash. Playing with the wind at their backs the Magpies started off well and took the lead after 13 minutes when number 8 Steffan Davies powered his way over for a try under the posts which was converted by acting skipper Steffan Price. After the promising start the Magpies gradually let St Clears back into the game and they duly pulled 5 points back with an unconverted try after 19 minutes. With 32 minutes gone the Saints took the lead with a converted try to make the score 12-7 which is how it remained despite the Magpies threatening the home try line several times in the last 10 minutes of the half. There were also a couple of opportunities to kick for the posts which were not taken in the quest to score the try, which on reflection should have been taken.

The slight wind that had been at Tumble's backs during the first half suddenly turned into a monsoon of near biblical proportions in the second half and the home side were able to play the conditions well pining Tumble in their own half. The lead was extended to 15-7 after 45 minutes when the Saints were awarded a penalty after a transgression at a ruck. St Clears then further extended their lead four minutes later when they scored a try from a driving maul. The conversion was added to make the score 22-7 which is how it remained until the final whistle, despite pressure and plenty of effort from the Magpies.

Again, this was a typical performance from our disappointing season with our young team failing to get anything out of a game despite showing plenty of guts and putting in the effort. Unfortunately, a lack of confidence and a failure to play the conditions was to be our downfall despite some good individual performances typified by forward Nathan Willard who did his best to drive his side forward at every opportunity with some strong running.

Due to the 6 Nations internationals there is no game for three weeks until Carmarthen Athletic arrive at Parc y Mynydd Mawr on the 23rd March (kick-off 2.30pm). Come and support the Magpies.
