After the Christmas break and two cancelled games the Magpies finally played their first game of 2022 when they travelled to St George's Field and returned with a 3-24 bonus point win against New Dock Stars RFC. Tumble started the game well and it only took them 11 minutes to open the scoring when captain and centre Steffan Price went over for a try following a mazy run from experienced wing Nicky Allinson. Outside half Steven Hewitt slotted over the conversion to make it 0-7. Two minutes later New Dock closed the score with a successful penalty goal following an adjudged high tackle, 3-7. Tumble were looking sharp in the opening 30 minutes, running the ball when given opportunity but silly mistakes, no doubt brought about by rustiness saw then loose possession. On 34 minutes New Dock Stars found themselves down to 14 men following a yellow card. The Magpies took advantage of the numerical advantage when full back Scott Jones crossed for a try following a penalty break from scrum half Iwan Morgan. The conversion was missed making the score 3-12 at half time.
Tumble started the second half strongly when Nicky Allinson scored a fine try on 47 minutes. The try came following a penalty and seven phases of controlled play by the Magpies. The conversion attempt went wide making the score 3-17. Seven minutes later the Magpies Faithful were back celebrating a try and a secured bonus point when Iwan Morgan touched down for a try. Great hands saw Tumble work the ball the length of the field before the powerful number 9 crossed the whitewash. Hewitt stepped up and secured the extra points with a well struck conversation, 3-24. With the bonus point in the bag, it looked like the Magpies would now cut loose, unfortunately the last 30 minutes became a scrappy affair with lots of the play being stuck in midfield. The final score was 3-24 and must be considered a big positive with a secured bonus point and the opportunity to get back on the field for the first time since 18th December. The win sees the Magpies three points clear of second placed Furnace United and five points clear of Trimsaran, who have two games in hand. A rusty performance but a welcome five points, man of the match was scrum half Iwan Morgan. Friday night sees the boys welcome sixth placed Llandybie RFC to Parc y Mynydd Mawr, kick off 7pm. Come and support the Magpies.
