A young Magpies side, showing a number of changes from the team that won in Milford Haven made the trip up the Dulais valley to play Division 2 West Central side (and old West Wales RU rivals) Seven Sisters RFC on a wet Friday night. In what was an even game in terms of possession and territory it was the dominance of the Seven Sisters scrum in the first half that was the difference between the sides with the Dulais Valley side eventually emerging 26-12 winners. After an even start with both sides having opportunities to score Seven took the lead after 13 minutes with a converted pushover try from 5 metres out. It only took seven minutes for the Magpies to draw the score level however when acting captain Steffan Price used his power and elusiveness to break through the home team's midfield and score near the posts. The try was converted by outside half Tomos Hancock who was making his first appearance since returning to his home village club. Whilst Tumble were playing some good stuff on a number of occasions moves broke down due to misplaced passes or handling errors. Seven further caputalised on their scrum dominance when they scored another pushover try from 5 metres after 27 minutes. The conversion was missed this time making the score 12-7 to Seven. Again both teams had opportunities and Tumble started to get parity in the scrum when on the stroke of half time the ball was turned over from a Magpies attack to allow Seven to break and score. The conversion was added to give the home side a healthy 19-7 lead at the interval.
The second half was again a fairly even affair with both sides having opportunities to score. A mistimed Tumble lineout near their own tryline saw Seven regather the ball and score a converted try to give them what looked like an insurmountable 26-7 lead. Tumble were now playing some good stuff but were again unable to turn possession and territory into points. A number of try scoring opportunities were not taken until scrum half Iwan Morgan darted over from close range on 35 minutes, the conversion being missed to make the score 26-12. Looking for another score Tumble again launched a long range attack and were held out in the corner. The ball was regathered by Seven who booted it straight into touch to end the game what appeared to be a few minutes early. Again there were a number of promising individual performances especially from some of the youth players. Congratulations to Alex Jones and Osian Edwards who made their senior debuts for the club.
Next week the real rugby starts when the boys travel to Tycroes RFC for the first game in Division 2 West. Kick-off is at 2.30pm, come and support the boys.
