On Sunday, 8 December Morriston Ladies arrived at Parc y Mynydd Mawr for the final game of the Women’s Merit Table South. With the Monkeys only having 14 players available the Piod Pinc were forced to drop a player to start a game with equal numbers. The game began and some impressive jackaling work from Nikki Howells at a ruck turns the ball over for the Piods. Play was taken into the Morriston 22 and the ball worked wide to Carla Roberts who crosses the whitewash for her first Piod Pinc try, 5-0. Tumble were putting a lot of pressure on their opponents and a lineout sees Charley Hunter win the ball against the throw. The resulting passage of play saw Meleri Hicks cross for a well taken try. Leah Coombes added the conversion to make it 12-0. Morriston were the next to score with a try which closed the score back to 12-7 before the Piods took control of the remainder of the first half. Great work by captain and scrum half Tina Thomas sees the ball get to the dangerous Meleri Hicks who drew the covering defence before gifting the ball to Gemma Sugden for an easy run in, 17-7. Next it was Hick’s opportunity to score after being provider for the previous touchdown. Combining well with Alaw Hughes the dangerous Hicks beats the covering Morriston defence to score her second try of the game from 30 metres out, 22-7. It was soon 27-7 when Hicks scored her third try of the game to complete her hattrick. Morriston were now on the rack and the Piod Pinc looked likely to score whenever in possession. A great break by Nikki Howells sees her gain 20 metres before offloading to Carla Roberts who goes over for her second try of the match, 32-7. The first half is completed when the powerful Billie-Jo Alexander powers her way through four players to score her first ever try for the club to make the score 37-7, which is how it remained at the interval.
The second half started as the first ended when Carla Roberts went over for her hattrick of tries after good work from Sophie Campbell-Cross. Leah Coombes steps up to covert and make the score 44-7. The tries were now coming thick and fast, first Leah Coombes runs in from 49 metres to score a fine individual try before Meleri Hicks finishes off a fine backs move to score her fourth try of the game and make it 54-7. At this point it looked like Morriston were well and truly buried but much to their credit they combined well to go over for a converted try to make the score 54-14. Stung into life a fine carry by young Megan Samuel sees captain Thomas distribute the ball to Carla Roberts to sensationally score her fourth try on her debut for the club, making it 59-14. Again, Morriston refused to lie down and again pulled a score back when their centre charged over the line after fine forward play, 59-21. Leading by example captain Tina Thomas was next to score after a break from Zoe McCall, 64-21. Unbelievably, Morriston yet again found the resolve to refuse to lay down and die and following a quick penalty they score yet again through their pacey backs, 64-26.
The final score of the game was to be Tumble’s however when great team play saw the ball worked to Zoe McCall who celebrated on her way in for her first try for the club following Leah Coombes, Tina Thomas and Megan Samuel, 69-26 and the final whistle is blown.
